Hydrolates are obtained from flowers and plant parts. They combine the concentrated power of the plants and, in addition to the fragrance, have various positive and negative effects. People with intolerance to certain plants often also react to the corresponding hydrosols. A single hydrolat consists of up to 200 chemical components - some of which can have an allergenic effect. For this reason, 26 allergenic components have been defined by the EU. These must always be shown separately in the overview of ingredients (INCI) and let people with allergies know that certain products should be avoided.

Facial serum: the ingredients in detail

1. Rose blossom hydrolate
Quality: organic
The active ingredients of the Damask rose blossoms are obtained from the steam distillation of organically grown roses. The flowers are picked early in the morning as this is the time when the oil content of the flowers is at its highest.

Rose blossom hydrolate is known for its calming and harmonizing effect and is therefore the main ingredient in our facial serum.

2. Ferment – ​​Vegan (!) lactic acid bacteria
Lactic acid bacteria preserve the serum and at the same time bring about a significant improvement in skin moisture. The active ingredient in our moisturizing serum is produced by fermentation, as we know it from the production of sauerkraut or kimchi.

Although the word milk is in the name, the lactic acid bacteria in the face serum have nothing to do with milk.

Many serums from natural cosmetics are preserved with alcohol. We were keen to avoid this as alcohol fluidises the skin barrier, leading to increased moisture loss. Of course, with the FIVE face serum we want to achieve exactly the opposite: namely to store water in and on the skin. Thanks to the innovative active ingredient, we have succeeded.

3. Glycerol
Quality: organic, made from coconut oil
Glycerin acts within the entire top layer of the skin (epidermis) and binds water there. As a result, glycerin increases skin moisture, promotes skin elasticity and protects the skin barrier.

Glycerin is one of the most powerful hydrating ingredients and is essential for a moisturizing serum. Like hyaluronic acid, it is a hygroscopic ingredient, but due to its tiny molecular size, it is better able to reach the deep layers of the skin and unfold its effect there. A frequently underestimated ingredient!

Glycerin is often criticized for being drying. This statement is only valid when used in extremely high concentrations, which is rarely if ever used in skin care. Then the glycerin would release the water bound from the skin into the air instead of keeping it in the skin. At lower concentrations - we use 4 percent in our face serum - this is not the case.

4. Vegetable hyaluronic acid
Quality: non-GMO, from grain
Hyaluronic acid effectively binds moisture to your skin and ensures resilience and elasticity. This demonstrably improves skin moisture levels. Hyaluronic acid also protects and regenerates the skin barrier.

We use high-molecular hyaluronic acid in our facial serum out of conviction. If you have already dealt with hyaluronic acid, this may surprise you, since in cosmetics, low-molecular hyaluronic acid in particular is considered the holy grail, since it not only acts on the skin, but can also pass through the skin barrier. This is undisputed, but various studies show that low molecular weight hyaluronic acid has a pro-inflammatory effect and is associated with scarring. In addition, the ability to bind water decreases as the size of the molecule decreases.

Reasons enough for us to rely exclusively on high-molecular hyaluronic acid (1-1.4 Mda), which binds water, promotes healing and has a regenerating effect. You can find out more about this in our article on the different hyaluronic acids .

5. L-arginine
L-arginine, at four percent, is a natural component of the skin's own moisture retention system. This system is called the Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF). L-arginine helps the skin retain water by preventing premature evaporation.

Application of face serum

The serum can either be used pure (for oily skin and/or in summer) or combined with the other FIVE products in the care system.

Please note
The facial serum comes with a pipette for hygienic removal and easy dosing. Please avoid contact of the pipette with your skin. It is best to drip the required amount into the palm of your hand and then apply the serum to your face with your fingers.

Use in the evening 🌜
The serum is ideal as a year-round oil-free night care because it does not weigh down the skin and it can regenerate in peace.

• Apply to face, neck and décolleté after cleansing.
• Tip: If you have irritated skin, mature skin or very dry skin, test it individually for a few days to see whether the oil-free night care provides relief. If, after a few days of testing, your skin still requires a little more extensive care, add a drop of face oil to the face serum in the palm of your hand and apply together.

Application in the morning ☀️
We recommend adjusting the care ritual in the morning to the skin type. Before applying the serum, wash your face with lukewarm water and dry it.

Combination skin, normal, oily and impure skin

• FIVE face serum with FIVE balance face oil in the palm of your hand and apply to face and décolleté.
• Tip: In summer you can FIVE Use face serum pure. Maybe even all year round for oily skin.

Dry skin, mature skin and sensitive skin

• Mix the FIVE facial serum with the FIVE Shea Cream or the FIVE Facial Oil – Dry Skin in the palm of your hand and apply to the face and décolleté.
• Tip: In summer, use ‹FIVE Face Oil – Dry Skin› rather than ‹FIVE Shea Cream›, as it is a bit lighter.

Can I also use the face serum for the eye area?

Absolutely! The delicate skin around the eyes needs a lot of care because it is thin and has few sebaceous glands. The serum is ideal for the eye area and supplies the skin with moisturizing and moisture-binding substances through rose hydrolate, hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Ideally, you combine the serum with the right facial oil or shea cream so that the eye area also gets nourishment in the form of fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants. The delicate eye area is cared for and cared for all around.

What the serum cannot do: If you are looking for a decongestant or brightening eye care product, special active ingredients are required that this serum does not contain.

How much serum should I apply?

If you want to care for your face, neck and décolleté with the serum, we recommend using about half a pipette per application.

For how many applications does the moisturizing serum last

If used twice a day, the facial serum lasts for about a month, or about 60 applications.

Is the serum also suitable for men?

Yes, definitely. And we'll tell you something: the men around FIVE love to use this product from us, because the oil-free texture makes the serum super light and refreshing and it absorbs very quickly. So what are you waiting for?

Can I wear the serum under sunscreen and foundation?

It is the ideal base for make-up or sunscreen. Since it contains no gelling agents, it will never crumble or create those nasty little rolls that can completely ruin your makeup. The combination with rather rich foundations, which would look too heavy together with a cream as a base, is particularly nice. The same applies to sun creams: rich sun creams with mineral UV filters require a light base. The face serum can also score here.
