Summer skin care follows its own rules

We love summer! Long days, warm air and splash on the sun terrace, we sorely missed all of that over the winter. But the very things we look forward to most present new challenges to the skin. You can find out here what they are, how they affect your skin and which rules of thumb there are for skin care in summer. Of course, we also make a detour to UV protection. Because it should not be missing in your daily routine.

Tip 1: Why moisture comes before fat in summer

The rule of thumb for skin care in summer is «Moisture before oil». In winter it was the other way around. Since we put a greater emphasis on oils to protect the skin from cold and dry air. But in warm temperatures, rich products often feel directly uncomfortable. So put away the cosmetic winter clothes and take it easy!

In summer, sebum production increases compared to other seasons. So your skin is naturally a little oilier when it gets warm. That is why the face quickly feels oily and shiny when it is hot. You can compensate for this by adjusting your skin care routine. Use oil-based products sparingly and ramp up moisturizers.

Summer skin care for dry skin

The increased sebum production is helpful for dry skin types. Now she's finally making enough fat. If you find yourself here, make sure you stay hydrated anyway. Water doesn't evaporate from your skin that quickly, but you have to have enough of it first. Replenish your stores in the morning by using a small amount of facial oil or cream along with plenty of moisturizing serum apply

Summer skin care for oily or combination skin

Skin types that already produce enough or even too much sebum cannot get enough moisture in summer. It improves the skin's own cleansing function by liquefying the sebum and thus promoting the removal of fat. An excess of thick, sticky sebum can clog pores and cause pimples to sprout.

Depending on how oily your skin feels, on warm days you can sometimes completely do without oily care and just a Use moisturizing serum. You can of course continue to use special facial oils that fight the cause of the impurities, such as our facial oil for impure or oily skin. Play around with the dosage here to keep your skin from feeling too oily.

Our FIVE summer care set consists of our facial serum and the facial oil that is right for your skin type.

Tip 2: Don't forget sunscreen!

UV protection is a must, period. It is the most important means of preventing premature skin aging and skin cancer. Basically, it doesn't matter whether you use a mineral or a chemical filter. From a natural cosmetic point of view, I definitely recommend the mineral one. The article Natural sunscreen - what to look for, my absolute recommendation to read before sunscreen, deals with why this is better for the skin and the environment and how you can find your favorite product -Purchase!

☝️ The 3-step rule applies to all-round effective sun protection. The article tells you what it is How much sun can my skin tolerate? – 7 sun protection tips.

The dilemma with sunscreen for the face

For the face, oily sunscreens can pose a challenge. In summer we don't want to put too much fat on the skin because it produces more itself. At the same time, when it comes to UV protection, you shouldn’t skimp on the quantity.

mineral sunscreens based on aloe gel are ideal here. It has a naturally cooling effect and provides plenty of moisture. This effect is promoted, for example, by glycerin. My favourite: The Madará Age Protecting Sunscreen SPF 30. It was the clear winner of our Sun Screen Test last year and can be easily combined with our products.

With chemical filters there is an even wider range of textures, such as weightless UV water or gels. However, they are not natural cosmetics and usually also contain silicone and PEG.

😎  Where is the sun protection?

  • Mineral filters: apply skincare first and sunscreen last. If you want to combine the sunscreen with makeup, it would theoretically have to be applied under the sunscreen. Not very practical! Tip: Use Mineral Makeup. This consists of zinc oxide and may be worn on top
  • Chemical filters: it doesn't matter here, you can apply them with your skin care routine or after your make-up.

Always wash off sunscreen thoroughly

In order for your skin to regenerate optimally overnight, it must be able to breathe. So the sunscreen should be washed off thoroughly every day. UV protection with chemical filters can usually be easily rinsed off with a shower gel.

Mineral sunscreens are best removed with body oil or make-up remover oil. The FIVE make-up remover provides your sun-stressed skin with antioxidants and soothes it with mild organic almond, apricot kernel and jojoba oil.

Our FIVE Make-up Remover easily removes sunscreen from your skin and leaves your skin feeling clean and nourished.

Tip 3: Peeling for the perfect glow

Regular peelings contribute to smooth skin and an even tan. They remove dead skin cells and this has many advantages.

  • care products can have an optimal effect.
  • The hair removal is more thorough because fewer hairs grow in.
  • Peeling promotes blood circulation and thus regeneration.
  • They soften rough areas for a better tanning result - applies to self-tanner and sun.
  • Facial scrubs can reduce blemishes effectively.

With so many plus points, it's definitely worth the effort. And that is limited because once or twice a week is completely sufficient. Exfoliating too often can make the skin sensitive. And one more thing: When it comes to scrubs, you should definitely differentiate between the body and face because the skin is different.

Body scrubs

As a body scrub, mechanical peelings are ideal. Both products and beauty tools such as dry brushes or sisal gloves are recommended here. The gloves are particularly easy to use. You can use it to give your skin a massage before you shower. This also brings a hello-awake effect in the morning!

Scrubs for the face

The face prefers it the gentle way. Especially in summer you should use mild products. My tip is therefore enzyme peelings or a DIY peeling with chickpea flour. Under Everything goes smoothly with the right peeling you will find out in more detail why the mild versions are ahead of the fruit acid peelings.

With products with a fruit acid complex (AHAs or BHAs), caution is advised in summer anyway. Due to their peeling effect, they increase the skin's sensitivity to light. That's why they should only be used before going to bed, if at all. Sensitive skin in particular sometimes reacts irritated to sunlight even the next day. That's why you play it safe with the gentle variants.

summer tan

Liing on the beach as a fluorescent lamp doesn't feel very sexy. If you don't want to sizzle in the sun for days for crunchy caramel, self-tanners are an alternative. They are also available in natural cosmetics as a cream, spray or feather-light mousse.

The tanning active ingredient in self-tanners (both natural cosmetic and conventional) is called dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and is a sugar that is usually obtained from glycerine - so it works here too purely vegan. Self-tanners are being discussed because of this substance. Under certain conditions, formaldehyde can split off here. While the levels are within the EU Cosmetics Regulation, not everyone likes to take a risk for a tan.

Unfortunately, there are no unreservedly recommended methods for a summer tan, be it sunbathing or self-tanning. Here you have to find your own personal feel-good solution. There is a little help at Peppermynta, where you can get an overview of natural cosmetic self-tanners.

☝️ Tip: Formaldehyde splits off in tanning products, especially if they are stored too warm. Note here the information on the packaging and put the product in the refrigerator.

Conclusion: 3 tips ensure beautiful skin in summer

There are also seasons in skin care. With three basic rules, your skin will shine as soft, fresh and crunchy as a peach, even in the summer heat:

  • Moisture before fat – your face's best friend is a moisturizing serum, while oils are now used sparingly.
  • Sunscreen is a must – Products with mineral UV filters and aloe gel provide purely natural protection and provide plenty of moisture.
  • Regular peeling - this refines the complexion, enables an even tan and reduces impurities.

Well, we're ready, summer can come!
